Starting Out
If you are playing for the first time and making a new character, then you will probably not struggle with getting Gil. The main story, job quests and other side missions that can be picked up along the way are great sources of getting Gil in the game. You will not have to buy your own gear since it steadily comes in as rewards, and for higher level stuff you can farm dungeons for Gil.
If you end up in a mind, where you may have to spend too much on teleports, but you do have a couple of options. You can get Gil anywhere between 500 to 2000 each time by playing certain Levequests over and over, depending on the difficulty and speed of completion. If you are a mid level player (25-40), you can also farm enemies for materials that can be used by Crafters. The actual crystals are one of the easiest ones. You can find Sprite enemies that drop these crystals in practically every zone. They do not have an out of this word drop rate, but if you get lucky and you are near Costa Del Sol, you can net almost 20,000 Gil by farming the Wind Sprites there.
End Game Farming
After reaching 50, a lot of potential options will become available for you to get Gil. Disciplines of Magic and Disciplines of War can also farm enemies in the same way as above. Usually, more materials are needed by Crafters, so this is typically a steady supply of Gil. Depending on the world, desired items tend to vary. For instance, it is possible to find Clusters, Crystals, Diremite Web, Fleece, and many other items on enemies.
However, it is necessary that you can only get Gil by killing enemies. Upon completing dungeons, such as Ampador Keep, you can get Tomes of Philosophy. Although you can typically use these for gear for your character, you can also buy crafting materials with them as well. Crafters tend to seek these materials the most to make end game gear. A Crafter can sell a single of the end game gear for up to 50,000 Gil, depending on the server. You can make more than 300,000 Gil by spending a few days farming some Dungeons.
Maximize Profits
It is true that doing everything on your own is the best way to truly make tons of Gil. A steady supply of items can be farmed. Crafted and mine with the classes Discipline of the Hand, Discipline of the Land, and Discipline of War, and you will not have to buy anything from the Market Board. If you still cannot figure out how to get Gil in FF 14 or you having much luck at getting Gil, you can always buy Gil as well.
